Can there be a difference between a boss and a leader?

As we study leadership and conflict resolution, the question arises:

Is there a difference between a boss and a leader? What makes someone a leader and not just a boss?

A boss is just a position. It can be given to anyone. However, without leadership skills, a boss will not be able to be a proper leader. There are people who have incredible leadership skills and they are not bosses. However, they can manage a group of people easily and efficiently making them a great leader. Usually, these people are promoted into supervisors or managers. In short, yes, there is a great difference between boss and leader.

  2. There can definitely be a difference between a leader and a boss. A boss is only a person in a position above yours regardless of qualifications. Whereas a leader has the skills necessary to lead a group of people to a goal and do it efficiently.

  3. There is a difference between a boss and a leader depending on how someone acts and handles certain situations. A leader is someone who is responsible and does their part. A leader also takes control of a small group and keep everything organized. A boss is just a title. You can be a boss to anyone but that doesn't make you a leader. Many times people do not enjoy having someone as a boss because they do not take the title serious. They take advantage of the title and treat people like slaves. So it really depends on who the person is and how their attitude is.

There is a major difference between a boss and a leader. A boss is someone who likes to give orders without reason behind it. This is how he or she wants it for their benefit not so much for the company. A leader is someone who guides others in the right direction to reach a common goal. He or she is helpful in anyway possible and is not afraid of helping when it is needed.

  5. There is a very big difference between a boss and a leader that can be simplified to one thing. A boss tells an employee what to do, a leader shows them. I've had many bosses in my time, and being just a boss isn't necessarily a bad thing; although, once I finally had a leader as my boss I never wanted to go back. A leader isn't always a boss either, they can be anyone in the workplace or classroom that takes charge and helps lead the group towards the goal. I hope, and strive to always be a leader and never just a boss.

  7. I believe there is a difference between a boss and a leader. A boss has various activities to successfully achieve while a leader has activities as well, but they are not as strict as what the boss has to get done. Plus a leader stands up for himself and others, while a boss takes orders from another person.

  8. I think that in order to be a leader and not just a boss, a person needs to be able to relate and interact with the people they are leading without being over-baring or condesending. A good leader knows how to take criticism and turn it into something useful and practical.

  9. Yes, their is a difference. When someone is a boss and a leader, they are putting forth the same amount of effort as everyone else, and maybe even a little more. They are in the front instructing people on what to do, as well as working side by side with them. Sometimes, bosses think they just tell people what to do and watch them work. That is not accurate. Being a leader is an important part of being a good boss.

  10. The difference between a boss and a leader is that a boss bosses you around tells you what to do but a leader will lead you and help you with what you have to do. What makes someone a leader not just the boss is helping you out showing you what needs to be done and how. Treating you like your on the same level as they are.

  11. In my opinion, I believe there is a big difference between a boss and a leader. A boss is someone who is higher up than you and just tells you what to do and what they expect of you. A leader is someone who tells you what to do but also leads by example of what they want you to accomplish. I believe a leader is more team orientated and more apt to listen to your ideas than a boss. I would rather be lead by a leader rather than a boss.

  12. I think the differences between boss and leader are very thin as a piece of paper. Boss tell them what to do but Leaders communicate with them how they will figure it out. Boss stay behind while people work and do only what he has to do but Leader understand his or her people's circumstance and work with them I think the major differences between a boss and a leader

  13. I think a leader is someone who is sure in their decisions, thinks things through, and can handle pressure.
Also someone who is likability, who cares, is courageous, and wouldn't mind taking the place of the person who's got the hardest job. Someone who has compassion, and is involved in everything, but has the ability to step back and look at things with an un-biased opinion. Some people take the role of a boss just telling people what to do.

  14. A leader is a person that helps you complete you task when you do not know how to. A person will be more comfortable to go up to a leader. On the other hand, a boss is harder to deal with because a boss all ready expects you to know how to complete a task. A boss is a commander, and a leader is a helper.

  15. Anyone can be a "boss" or put in a position to supervise. But a leader is someone who doesn't just watch the workers, a leader cares about the workers, guests/customers, service, and the overall well-being of the project. Not only do they focus on how to improve these aspects, but they also show others how to do so and help them rather than just critique and "supervise". They remain open to suggestions on how to improve. They revolve around the project; they don't make the project revolve around them.

  16. Yes there could be a difference between being a boss and a leader. Being a boss means you're in charge of people and them doing their work. Being a leader means people look up to you and you know what you're doing. Just because you're a boss doesn't necessarily mean you are a leader. Being a leader can lead you to being a boss. Being a boss is more of a position where you have to tell people what to do. Being a leader, people want to do what you do.

  17. A boss is watching and supervising to ensure the job gets done. his employees are miserable and many times hate him. A leader inspires workers and loves what he does.

  18. There is a difference between a leader and a boss, because a boss is someone who's in charge. A boss tells his employees what to do and makes sure everyone is focused on their job. A leader will help out their co-workers and make sure the job gets done as a team. The leader uses teamwork so the goal is accomplished, unlike the boss.

  19. A boss is a person that owns the company or is typically in charge. A leader is usually the manager or the person that is running things. The leader is responsible for the work that is being done, where typically the boss doesn't have to get down and dirty. Being a leader is a trait some people have, they are not just qualified. A person who becomes a boss often has the position passed down, or is smart enough to own a company and hire workers under him to do the work they don't want to do. Where a leader works hard for their position and has earned their title.

  20. There is a difference between a boss and a leader. A boss is someone who has to be in charge. They earned that positioned. They worked hard for it. They can tell you what to do. Whatever they're in charge of, it is most likely theirs, like they own it. A boss is permanent. A leader is someone who chooses to be in charge. People look up to you. It can also be someone who doesn't mind having responsibilities for a couple hours or days. They are there to help anyone in need. A leader is only temporary.

  21. A boss is a position one can eventually earn but that does not necessarily mean a boss can be a leader. Leaders influence others and have the ability to inspire and eventually make a movement, while being a boss just gives mandatory authority. One can choose their leader while one cannot choose their boss. A boss can also be looked at as a joke at times while a leader cannot, because one is decides who to follow and what leader to look up to they admire instead of bashing them. Someone is considered a leader when they inspire and can lead others whether it is in a positive or a negative way. A leader is someone who is admired by many for their actions and aspire others to do the same actions as them.
