I'm Giving my Boyfriend an Ultimatum

We studied interpersonal relationships and explored the ins and outs of conflict this week. Watch the introduction of this episode of MTV's True Life (or the full episode if you'd prefer!) and share your opinion on how to deal with disruptive, dysfunctional relationship conflicts and how to improve communication with one another.

  1. The best way to deal with a dysfunctional relationship is to determine where the problem is coming from, and try to find the best way to solve it. A lot of these problems start with one person hearing something about the other and then quickly jumping to conclusions. These types of problems can be easily avoided by just sitting down with the person and listening to their side of the story. We are so quick to give up on things as soon as they start to get difficult. The best way to improve on this is simply talking to other person and giving feedback both negative and positive. Be mindful to one another and understand that we all have different viewpoints, and we need to respect some one else's opinion, even if it differs from ours.

  2. I believe when someone decide to stay together they have to accept and respect all different angles of other. There are no bad things about each other when they are in love, and opposite. people change everyday like in the 2nd situation the at beginning the girl like to hang out with her boyfriend because he is a dj. Then when she got into college the perspective is changed and she don't like her boyfriend be a dj anymore. I think if they want to continue their relationship one of them have to give up something and it depend on how they see what is more valuable than another.

  3. In order to improve communication skills with one another the two have to actually listen. When someone is really listening they are able to put aside their own feelings and pay attention to what is being said.We get too caught up in our own feelings that we block out what the other person is feeling. Also allowing someone to fully speak so they are able to get everything out. When someone feels like they are not being heard they can become frustrated. This is what usually leads to yelling arguments and communication that is not going to end with a solution or an understanding. If people would just listen, understand, and stay calm their communication skills with one another would improve.

  4. My opinion on how to deal with relationship conflicts definitely depends on the situation. If my boyfriend was being completely unfair and unreasonable, I'd cut him off right away. But that's just me personally. I have too much pride and I know it could be a bad thing but if someone is not treating me the way I'm supposed to be treated, then there's no reason for them to be around. It may be different if I was in complete love. For sure I'd give him a chance to change and try solving our problems but if it doesn't work, and he doesn't put much effort, I'm not one to stick around while being treated like dirt.

  5. Unless both individuals can find a way to compromise and agree to disagree, then it would be best to remove yourself from a toxic environment. The longer you stay, the longer it will take for you to break free from the dysfunctional relationship. When dealing with a partner relationship, it is always important to stay in control of yourself. Do not let the partner use temper as a persuading factor to get what they want. You can improve communication with one another by suppressing your tone of voice, changing words that sound too harsh and choosing to speak respectfully in language absent of threats.

  6. I feel these relationships had no communication at all. The women are trying to control them and make them do things instead of actually trying to work it out and talk to them like adults. You talk to someone like their a kid, then their most likely going to act up like one. It is very important to listen to one another on how you feel. Some people do not understand that not all people will give them what they want with a snap of a finger, it take times and communication to make things work.

I think these were more childlike relationships than adult relationships. I've seen many teenagers younger than me have these kind of relationships and I find it to be very immature. Talk it out like adults and come to a proper agreement. I hate ultimatums and maybe that is skewing my view a little.

I honestly believe that people should really get to know each other first before moving on to the next stage of their relationship. This video demonstrated couples who are young and not sure what direction they are heading in yet, for example when Amela does not like the fact that her boyfriend is a dj and now she wants him to quit and doing something else. In my opinion this is wrong because she even stated that she liked the fact that he was a dj and it made things exciting. Now she is flipping the script and saying that he needs to change or she is leaving him. The bottom line is if you start dating someone and you know what they are doing as a career and you like that person then you should accept who they are because that is the reason you fell in love with them in the first place.

  9. The best way to deal with a dysfunctional relationship is to sit down and talk with them. This doesn't mean yelling at them or cursing at them because that won't lead to anywhere. Come to a solution with your partner and make it work out for both sides. Communication is key to having a healthy relationship, and the best way to communicate is to take time for your significant other and listen to what they have to say.

  10. In order to improve disruptive or dysfunctional relationships I think it is crucial there is communication between one another. Even when there is sold communication, sometimes things still do not go as planned. If that happens I think it is very reasonable to simply end the complicated relationship. Sooner or later that toxic relationship will start affecting others not only the pair. To improve communication one can listen to one another much more carefully or try to come to a conclusion on what is going to happen or who is in the wrong and who is in the right.
