The "I Am Human" project seeks to increase awareness of the use of derogatory and degrading language on and off campus. By directly and honestly addressing language issues in our everyday lives, we can foster environments that uplift instead of dehumanizing others. The campaign features students, alumni and employees sharing personal experiences and messages of awareness about this issue.
Derogatory language on a college campus is a huge impact on a students improvement on their courses because it could affect them emotionally. This means that their self-esteem will drop making them think they are not worthless. This will cause them to no focus on their courses and not accomplish their academic goals. Derogatory language should be avoid at all times in campus to avoid problems and who ever does use derogatory language against another student should be punished severally.
ReplyDeletePeople call each other by nickname either they want to harassing or just make fun, it's still disrespectful. The reason behind is the difference between culture. Example in US, people like to show off what they got, competitive to each other. That why the way they talk may be very aggressive. Some of the culture are opposite and it make the scale become more difficult to say whatever it ok or not to say something. And we can do something like a speech about that to all campus and some how it can prevent the act
ReplyDeleteThe impact of derogatory language on a college campus is very negative. No one at school should be judged or criticized based on who they are. Everyone comes to school for the same reason. No one should have to worry about being bullied every time they go to school. What I think should be done about it is, get people to be aware of what's being said or what's going on around them. If they see or hear anything inappropriate, they should immediately report it.
ReplyDeleteColleges in the US have large numbers of students from diverse backgrounds and places from all over the word. As a result of that, there can be a lack of understanding between people from different cultures mixed together. Derogatory language used at a college campus offends, isolates and hurts people, which may lead to violence. It can also lower self-esteem and as a result, cause depression. I think we can act as a good example to each other by demonstrating respectful and appropriate language. Also the class syllabus can be used to inform students about potential consequences for using derogatory language. Certain restrictions need to be put in place to avoid the use of derogatory words at school. Students who don't comply with those rules should be confronted by the proper school officials to deal with their behavior.
ReplyDeleteThe impact of derogatory language is that students think it is okay to use in the classroom setting. This can be a big distraction to other's as well as offend people. I have also heard many instructors using derogatory language and that can make students think there is nothing wrong with it. I think the college campus's should make it aware that derogatory language is unacceptable. The instructors should also stay professional because of the fact that they are the "role models" on campus.
ReplyDeleteI think we are all adults and should speak to each other in a respectful way. If a derogatory term is used it usually isn't a big deal, depending on the way it was used. if a student uses foul language, they are often unaware of it. It has almost developed into our vocabulary. Often times when teachers use these terms I find it interesting. I don't mind it at all because it helps remind me that these teachers are human just as we are. They will make mistakes and It often gets the attention of most students. If a student can't control themselves and is constantly using such negative terms, the school should have a talk with them and possibly look into dropping them from there courses.
ReplyDeleteUsing derogatory language isn't a good thing and it's sad because on college campuses people think it is okay or a normal thing to do. Saying something irrelevant or rude just to be "funny" isn't okay. No one knows what another person might be going through and that's why I think people should watch what they say or like my mom says if you got nothing nice to say then don't say it. Some things are better left unsaid. Even though some people like to act like it doesn't hurt, it does. No matter how many years have passed by.
ReplyDeleteDerogatory language will hurt someone's reputation who heard that as well as someone who said that. I bet lots of portion of students in campuses used at least once curse words but the words are used so commonly that people may see them as “normal.” However, “normal” and “ethically right” are two different things. so I suggest people to think twice before they say it out loud. It is totally unacceptable to use derogatory languages in official places specially in campus. I think we should have disadvantage to people who use derogatory languages
ReplyDeleteThe impact of derogatory language on a campus, as it is anywhere, is very detrimental. Derogatory language can cause a lot of harm to the person it is directed towards. It can change the way they see themselves, and in turn may alter their future choices. Demeaning language can make people blind to their own value as a person, making them a risk to themselves and possibly other people. The best solution to this is to always think about what you say before you say it and the harm it may cause the person you are saying it to. Try to experience the remark as they would, if it would hurt or offend you it could just as easily injure them. Lead by example, always practice respect for others and all their differences because they are what makes us human.
ReplyDeleteThe impact that can be caused in derogatory language can cause people to look down on themselves. This can cause many things to happen such as suicide, hurting themselves, or going on a rampage and create a massacre. The only way that this can be stopped is by educating the community about it. Making sure that students, faculty, and parents understand what damage our language can cause to other people. We can end lot of damage if we just start thinking about what language we are using as a society.
ReplyDeleteThe impact of derogatory language has the same effect anywhere you go even beyond campus. It belittles people and make them think less of themselves. I personally have not experienced this at this college, however during my elementary and middle school years I was bullied and it was an awful but also life changing experience. Derogatory language, unfortunately, will always be around because it is a part of human nature. However, it can be suppressed to a point but it will never go away.
ReplyDeleteDerogatory language is used all around the world, in many different ways and languages. The effect of using it on a college campus has the same effect as using it anywhere else... Using it to describe someone or using it hurtfully has the same effect as using it for that same reason anywhere else. In my opinion, there is not much that can be done due to the fact that it has been around for so long and all of the world is using it. There has already been several methods to try and reduce it such as censoring and banning it from class/work/church, but at the end of the day the person still does it in a different environment.
ReplyDeleteThe use of derogatory language can have a negative impact on anyone. College is meant for us to progress towards the future we want. Its very important that we feel confident in ourselves to be able to conquer any obstacle that comes in our way. If we have someone bringing us down and making us feel less of ourselves we wont believe that we can do anything. We should stand up for one another, if someone is being bullied or talked to in a way that isn't right we should speak up. Any little thing someone can do can have a great impact on a person. They shouldn't feel worthless and they sometimes need some help from others to remind them what they are worth.
ReplyDeleteDerogatory language definitely has a negative effect on people. Especially, in today's youth. Pop Culture may have a little to do with the bad language being passed around lately. College students are constantly using derogatory language to put others down, it may be funny to the person speaking it but not to the person who is receiving it. I think if more people were educated of the effects of derogatory language and also learned about different cultures, they would be better aware of what they are saying. Some people just say bad things because they heard it in a song or don't know the true meaning behind it, but because it is a popular thing they use and repeat it. Change can be made by having a little more insight on what is actually going on when derogatory language is being used.
ReplyDeleteDerogatory language should be taken seriously and not in a joking manner. Derogatory language can impact a person greatly and stick with them for the rest of their lives. The best way to deal with derogatory language is to ignore the person. If that doesn't help then seek help from family or close friends for support.
