Let's talk about television commercials. What are your feelings about TV ads? Do you skip them? Do you enjoy them? What are some of your favorite spots, and what makes you enjoy them? Describe the elements that you believe make a television ad successful.
Liz DeGroot:
ReplyDeleteI prefer TV ads to radio ads. Radio ads in general are annoying. Regardless of how clever they are or how great of a job they did advertising, I will never listen to them and either turn the volume all the way down or change the station. TV ads are more interesting and can sometimes be clever. I have never been influenced to buy a product based off of a TV advertisement, but I find them somewhat entertaining at times.
TV ads are a great way to reach a large audience. Even though Americans seem to be moving towards streaming services, many people still watch live television. I personally don't watch TV very much, but when I do I don't skip the ads. However, I may be doing something else so my attention is focused on the ad. I prefer Internet ads and videos to TV spots, but recently I saw a Sonic commercial for their milkshakes and it looked so good that my girlfriend and I got up and left to go get Sonic milkshakes in the middle of the night, the television still flickering.
ReplyDeleteI like television commercials because it gives me a break to get up and do something else. I do not usually watch them since I usually leave the room or am staring at my phone. I think a television ad is successful when it makes the brand or product memorable not just the commercial. I prefer when the advertisement is funny or clever.
ReplyDeleteI despise television advertisements. So much that I only watch Netflix or pre-recorded shows. The only time I will allow for advertisements on TV is during the Super Bowl because they are funny. Also if a commercial is funny or clever, I am going to read about it online anyways. They disrupt my programs and I find them annoying. Ask any of my friends or family, I mute the TV when commercials come on. If I had to describe elements of a television ad being successful to me, it would be comedy, emotionally appealing or a product that can benefit my life. For example, I enjoy the Old Navy ads especially the current campaign with Elizabeth Banks. I also enjoy the Bud Light Party campaign of course and the re-branding of the style of their can.
ReplyDeleteI don't usually mind television ads because I have never watched TV and not seen ads. I personally don't watch too much cable TV. I know people who do and they can not stand TV ads and skip to other channels till whatever they were watching is back on TV. However I do watch Hulu, Netflix and HBO which I love because there are little to no ads. I love TV ads that are funny. Personally those are the ads that stick out the most to me and are the most memorable.
ReplyDeleteI feel television ads can be effective if they are creative and carefully constructed so that advertisers goals are achieved. I often skip, or pay no attention to, commercials. Sometimes, one catches my eye if it is visually appealing or interesting. They need to stand out from other commercials. I feel a commercial has to immediately grab attention, convey the message in a creative and yet memorable way and, most importantly, it needs to accomplish its intended objective. The consumer needs to respond to the call-to-action that the commercial delivers.
ReplyDeleteI tend to really enjoy television commercials if they are done well and are entertaining/clever. I don't tend to skip them out of pure laziness, but I do sometime tune them out entirely and use the time to check my social media or answer messages during the break between the show I'm watching. Unfortunately I don't have the time to watch much TV anymore, but my favorite Superbowl commercial was a T-Mobile ad that feature Steve Harvey. It was a reference to an AT&T ad that had insulted T-Mobile, and I thought their way to responding to it was incredibly clever but still professional. I think for an ad to be successful it must grab the viewers attention, be entertaining (usually humorous), and be creative so it stands out from other advertisements.
ReplyDeleteI think TV ads are useful and serve a purpose. I personally try to skip them if I can or I usually go on my phone while they are playing. I enjoy some commercials, usually the feel-good commercials with a strong message, or the rare commercials that are actually funny. I also like any commercials with dogs and puppies, obviously. One of my favorite TV commercials right now is the Extra Gum: The Story of Sarah and Juan commercial. I think that for a TV advertisement to be successful, it has to leave an impact. In my opinion, successful commercials leave a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart, leave you uncontrollably laughing or sometimes even shedding a tear. When a commercial's message is so strong that it compels you to have an emotion towards it, that is when the brand leaves an impact on you.
ReplyDeleteI think TV ads are an excellent way for companies to promote their products to a large audience. Although they can be frustrating for TV watchers, I tend to enjoy commercials. I think commercials that are done right can often times be entertaining and educating. My favorite spots are the commercials that push boundaries and make viewers feel happy, comforted, and all around proud of society. For example, Tylenol's #HowWeFamily commercial introduces the various dynamics of family, love, and acceptance in a way that is empowering and enlightening. Every time I see the commercial I feel motivated to stand as an aid in support of gay rights. You can watch the commercial here: http://money.cnn.com/2015/06/12/news/companies/tylenol-gay-family/
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings when it comes to TV commercials. A lot of times when I'm watching a movie or show and its goes to commercials I tend to flip the channel to another show thats not on commercials. With that being said, I'm not the biggest fan of TV advertisements, personally. But if there is any type of TV ads that I find effective, it would be commercials that include some sort of comedy. Or if they're advertising something that I'm actually interested in like the new IPhone or the next big Samsung HD TV. So to me, a successful TV ad should include humor or electronics.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, I used to ignore or otherwise skip TV ads. Today, though, I actually make an effort to sit through them, given I feel that the quality (or at least effort put into them) of TV ads is higher than it was in the early 2000s and before. One of my favorite recent commercials was Discover's "Surprise" commercial featuring a randomly-placed goat in a man's apartment resulting in a torrent of high-pitched screaming (from both sides). It would come off as grating if done poorly, but is absurd enough to actually be funny and doesn't drag longer than necessary. These are also actually the elements that I believe make a television ad successful. Proper use of whatever theme the ad is going with (humor or otherwise) along with the correct length.
ReplyDeleteIn general I skip television ads, unless I am watching a show that I don't want to miss not even a second I do believe that there are a lot of interesting and funny ads and that makes me to want to watch it sometimes. I hate the ads that are just about talking the product straight and does not tell the watcher any story. I like ads that are compelling (funny or emotional), like the budlight ad when the dog waits forever for his owner that went out to drink. This type of ad makes me go over on youtube to watch again, and that is the type of successful commercial companies want. Monique Cordeiro
ReplyDeleteDepending on what type of advertisement is being displayed, like if it is an action or comedy I typically am interested in them. If the advertisement is informational based, then i will likely change the channel. I really enjoy Comedy Central and ESPN's commercials. They're targeted towards my age demographic and are typically very amusing. 1. The ad must be focused to that specific target audience. 2. I also believe humor or something eye catching like an action effect or shot is very important to any advertisement.
ReplyDeleteI have a love hate relationship with TV commercials. I watch an alarming amount of TV, mostly on Apple TV, but when I watch cable with commercials I find that I don't mind them as some of my friends do. I think I've learned to appreciate what it takes to create those advertisements and how much thought and research is actually put into them. I tend to analyze some commercials and try to think why a brand may have taken that route and how they came up with it. Some of my favorite commercials all use animals in funny situations (Amazon, Doritos, Geico). I like them because they give an animal a voice and this personality that they use the brand, like they're ordering off Amazon or buying car insurance when in reality that would never happen.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy TV ads in the sense that they serve as intermissions from the shows I'm watching. Netflix is awesome, but often times I get sucked into this vortex of nonstop entertainment. I also enjoy picking apart horrible (often local) TV ads with my roommates. I believe a successful ad is one that makes you forget you're watching an ad.
