Career paths
If you were to enter the advertising world after college, where would you see yourself working? In-house? In an ad agency? A boutique or big agency? As an account executive, researcher art director, copywriter? Explain your choices.
I have wanted to be an art director since early high school. The job seemingly fits my personality perfectly, and I can't wait to work my way up there and do it. I'm not sure what kind of company or agency I would like to work at yet, but I am looking forward to trying out different things and seeing what I like. I'm currently looking for internships, so if I can get one at an ad agency, I can determine whether or not I want to work there.
Personally, as a PR concentration, I have no desire to go into advertising. It definitely is not my cup of tea. That being said, if I were to work in advertising, I feel as though I would be best suited for a job in an agency, where I would get to work on multiple projects for multiple clients, as opposed to working for one brand only. I think that my position would be more administrative and managerial as opposed to creative, because I feel that is where my strength would lie in that kind of industry/environment.
If I were to enter the advertising world after college, I see myself at a corporate advertising agency such as Anhueser-Busch for Budweiser and Bud Light products. The specific position would be likely be account executive because I enjoy management aspects of any task or project. I would love to manage the client's interests and goals because it is on a personal level, whereas I have great communication and organizational skills. I don't think I would ever be an art director, I am not too artistic, mostly just the ideas are as creative as it gets.
I would see myself at a boutique or a big big name company doing advertising/event planning. I could see myself doing a mix of these jobs for either a small name company or even a big name company. I am capable of working in big and small groups at a fast or slow pace. I would like to work for a company that I feel passionately about. I think social media advertising is where I would do best considering my generation is strongest in that aspect of the internet. I could also see myself coordinating events and thinking of strategies to advertise and market these events.
If I were to join the world of advertising, I would want to be an account executive. I enjoy working with people and feel as if I can keep my clients interests managed. I would want to work in an ad agency because of the plethora of jobs that would be flowing in and out. I think it would be exciting, and also very time consuming. Managing multiple clients at a time to the best of my abilities.
Liz DeGroot: After college, I would ideally like to be working for a high end cosmetic company. I am passionate about all things make up and feel that I could do a lot for the company as far as promoting their product since I have much insight and love for cosmetics. I am not sure exactly what I would specialize in but find art director or account executive to be interesting positions. Coming up with ideas for how to promote and advertise would be interesting. I would like to work for a high end company so that I wouldn't have to worry about throwing sales and coupons in the face of the consumers. I would much rather advertise towards a target market that tends to have more money and looking for the best of the best. In this way, efforts would be spent more creatively and elegantly than just BOGOS and coupons.
Since my concentration is in public relations, after college my ideal job would be in the public relations field. That being said, if I were to enter the advertising world I would want to be an account executive at either a boutique or large agency. I love how working in an agency, you get to oversee many different clients and participate in a variety of projects. I think different projects and tasks will make working more interesting and exciting to go to.
I am not sure if I would rather go into Advertising or Public Relations but if I were to do Advertising, I would rather work on the client end. I am not artistic but I have good interpersonal communication skills. I like how on the client side team work is more collaborative than in an agency. I work best when I have the opportunity to feed off other peoples ideas.
If I were to get into advertising after college, I see my self working in-house in a niche market. I have always been interested in trends, specifically micro trends. A lot o what starts out as micro trends catch on and create bigger markets. The ideal position for me would probably be as an art director or in a creative capacity. I'm am an idea person and tend to look at things from unique and different perspectives. I have a lot of experience working in different medias and building things so I feel this would be helpful when working with new products and new markets. I can even help put a new spin on old or existing things. This is often needed when rebranding or trying to update the look and appeal of established companies, brands and products.
If I were enter the advertising world after college I think I the best option for me is to work in an ad agency. Although I like the idea of in-house working I think that I need some "regular" work environment to achieve my best at work. I also don't think a big agency would be the best match for me, because I like to now everybody in the place I work/study, I believe that to be close to your co-workers, specially when you need to be creative, is the better experience you can have and helps a lot in the creative process. The best position for me in my opinion would be an account executive. Since the account director has to be in touch with client and agency all the time, and they also have to coordinate the campaigns I believe must be a vey dynamic position. Monique Cordeiro
If I were to work in advertising, I would have to pick between working at an ad agency or at my old internship in ad sales. Both sides have their benefits and setbacks, for example working at an ad agency would allow me to express my creativity while working in ad sales would allow me to utilize my skills as a salesman. The commission that comes from selling ad space to a client would definitely be a nice bonus, but it is also very easy for a client to pull out last minute. While I do enjoy the challenge of creating a great ad for a company, creative blocks can easily get in the way of doing a good job.
I do not think I will actually seek a career in advertising, but if I did, I would prefer to work as a copywriter. Even if SOME creativiy is required, there is not as much required as for the researchers or art directors. I do not have the managerial or leadership skills needed to be an account executive, so the position of copywriter is the only thing I could see myself doing remotely well.
If I were to pursue a career in the advertising industry I would make sure to find a position in the public relations area, not necessarily advertising. I see myself working as a public relation specialist for a sportswear company or a professional sports team. I would most likely focus on crisis management, enjoying the challenge to come up with strategic ways to overcome times of turmoil.
