Golden Pizza

Although not an official Super Bowl sponsor, Pizza Hut is still celebrating the game's golden anniversary, with plans to deliver 50 gold-flaked pizzas on its busiest day of the year. What are your thoughts on the idea? Does it appeal to you? What do you think are the most effective Super Bowl commercials?

  1. I think it is a good advertisement to entice people to buy pizza, but I do not think it is a good advertisement because it practically has nothing to do with the super bowl. The best super bowl commercial would still show the pizza, but instead show the people watching the super bowl at the same time, rather than just sitting down and eating it. The commercial does not seem relevant to the super bowl and the promotion it is attempting to sell but I think the way it was filmed would cause someone to crave pizza in general

  2. This Pizza Hut gold-flaked pizza advertisement is a good way to get consumers talking about Pizza Hut. It is definitely going to be something that people will want to order because it is a silly concept. Consumers who order the gold-flaked pizza will also probably take pictures and share with friends and family, which will bring more attention to Pizza Hut. To elevate the advertisement to the next level, they should make it funny. In my opinion, the most effective Super Bowl advertisements are the ones that get people laughing and talking about it after viewing. I usually see the best Super Bowl advertisements on all forms of social media being shared after the event if they are actually funny.

  3. I think Pizza Hut is brilliant to put their advertisement 10-15 minutes before the Super Bowl starts because I agree, the viewers are deciding what to munch on during the big game. Not only that, but the advertisement has a hit song by Flo Rida that will reach a wide demographic. Also, the pizza looks delicious, cheesy and unique with garlic knot crust. Not all, but a large amount of people drink alcohol during the game and nothing better than wings, pizza or chips and dip to eat while enjoying the afternoon. The gold promotion is a great way for people to order the new garlic knot pizza in hopes of receiving an even bigger "prize" (pizza). Very creative advertisement and excellent way to use promoting as a strategy. That is an extreme jump in sales from 80 to 90% on Super Bowl Sunday! pretty cool.

  4. I think the campaign Pizza Hut is putting is creative, but not necessarily effective. For starters the campaign is promoting only 50 gold-flaked pizzas to be delivered on Super Bowl Sunday, which for any person with common sense knows those odds are EXTREMELY unlikely. So as a consumer I'm almost positive I won't be one to receive this special pie, and the worst part of it all is that the promotion itself is not even rewarding. I doubt anyone even finds a gold-flaked pizza appetizing, let alone good enough to order Pizza Hut and hope you get the special delivery. What the company should have done was chosen one winner, delivered the golden pizza AND stream the live reaction during their Super Bowl commercial. The odds of winning are greatly reduced, but the benefit of having your 60 seconds of fame on National television during the most watched event of the year is priceless. All in all, the most effective Super Bowl commercials in my opinion use humor to capture your attention and spread the message of their brand. Ads need to compete with the hustle and bustle of Super Bowl Sunday, especially during commercial breaks.

  5. Unless someone is completely disconnected from technology and technologically-driven individuals, they are going to know what the Super Bowl is - even if all they know is that it means time for a big football party. This campaign is effective because all they have to do is allude to "the Big Game" and put a football next to the pizza and most people will know that they're talking about the Super Bowl. Pizza Hut doesn't need to be an official sponsor, because like the article said, most pizzas are ordered before the game starts.

The golden pizza is just a standard sweepstakes/lotto - type promotion, but it works. I bet they will reach their 2 million pizza goal this Sunday. I personally would be happy with the regular pizza they're offering, but it would be major bragging rights if I won a golden pizza, so I do think it appeals to me.

The most effective Super Bowl commercials are usually the ones that are the most memorable and well-planned/researched. Pizza hut is a great example of this (even though not technically a Super Bowl commercial) because they know when their sales are most likely to happen so they can capitalize on that.

  6. I like the train thought of an exclusive special on the anniversary of the 50th Super Bowl, but i'm not sure if I care for the 24 karate edible gold. If i'm ordering pizza I want that pizza to look, smell, and taste the way I imagined it. I feel as if, you tamper with the product to much it can be very unappealing. What i believe to be the best Super Bowl commercials are the Doritos commercials. Every year they have an outrageous idea filled with creativity which make all fans, of numerous demographics to bust out into laughter. -Matt C.

  7. Liz DeGroot:
I think that Pizza Hut promoting the golden pizza will help to gain the attention of pizza consumers at this time. It is an unusual concept and if anything, consumers may be more inclined to order from Pizza Hut to see if they will win one of the 50 golden pizzas. Although actually receiving the pizza may not have many benefits, it is a point of interest and create curiosity within the public. I feel that some of the most effective Super Bowl commercials are the ones that promote a bigger and more influential idea than simply the product. These feelings and messages conveyed are the ones that people will be more likely to remember and associate as a positive attribute to the brand. Promotional ideas such as this don't seem to have quite the same effect as they don't hit home and tap into viewer's emotions as much.

  8. I believe Pizza Hut is enjoying a good opportunity to promote their brand during Super Bowl even though Pizza Hut is not an official sponsor. I think that it is a good idea and can be very successful and reach a huge audience, specially considering the great outcome that the Super Bowl day brings to pizza’s companies, because people are always seeking for what to eat while watching the game. The commercial doesn’t appeal to me, I am not into football and I don’t eat pizza from Pizza Hut, so I m definitely not the target audience to this commercial. In my opinion the most effective type of Super Bowl commercials are the ones with some kind of emotional appeal (either humor or drama), those commercials make people remember and connect to the brand somehow.

  9. I think it's a neat incentive for customers looking to buy the garlic knots pizza. Its unique and unlike anything I've heard for a pizza company. It doesn't necessary appeal to me personally, however, I can see why the idea would be appealing to other consumers. I'm a little bias since I'm not the biggest Pizza Hut fan but I'll give them credit for the creativity put into designing the pizza. I did like how they run commercials prior to the Super Bowl airing since most of the food is ordered before the game starts. I believe thats a good effective strategy to use. I tend to like Super Bowl ads that have some sort of humor or emotion in it.

  10. As with anything involving edible gold, I view it as overly extravagant and somewhat ridiculous. At the same time, if Pizza Hut wants to give away these gold-flaked pizzas as part of a special event, I can’t really complain. I might view it as ridiculous, but it’s not really something that could be considered harmful in any way. As each of the 50 gold-flaked pizzas will only have around $100 worth of edible 24-karat gold on them, Pizza Hut will not have spent more than $5000.

On the other hand, I think the most effective Super Bowl ads are the ones that you can both enjoy and remember what product was being advertised. It is one thing to remember what product was being advertised but not having any interest in it or the commercial. It is also another thing to actually enjoy an advertisement, only to realize afterwards that you can’t remember what was being advertised.

  11. I think the advertisement was okay. Personally I felt as to much was going on and I had to re-watch it to understand the message. The ending part was funny about the gatorade being dumped on his head. I believe with the song of choice an the humor that was set inside the advertisement the target audience was people my age. I know personally I like that song and made the commercial more appealing to me. I think the most effective Super Bowl commercials are the funny ones. I love the funny commercials more then the actually game.. sometimes. But whatever the funniest commercial is always the one that is talked about and continues on after the Super Bowl. This instills the brand in my head an makes it more recognizable.

  12. The whole concept of edible gold on food grosses me out, let alone on Pizza Hut. Being from Long Island, I take pizza very seriously, which is why I usually refuse to eat from chains like Pizza Hut and Papa John's (Domino's is the only exception, but only at around 3 AM on the weekends). If I were to get a pizza for the Super Bowl, it would be from an actual pizzeria, regardless of the fact that I could possibly win a golden pizza from Pizza Hut.

  13. In my honest opinion, I guess I just can't really see the appeal in receiving a gold-flecked pizza. I understand the concept behind the idea, and yes it will probably increase sales for that day, but I feel as though the money spent on the gold could have been put to better use. I don't necessarily have an alternative option at the ready, but I think they could have come up with something else. I think the most effective Super Bowl commercials are those that are unexpected but clever/creative. And definitely funny. I think Pizza Hut is doing a great job by airing their commercials before the game, as opposed to paying to air during the game when people have likely already sorted out their meal plans for the evening.

  14. I guess delivering gold-flaked pizza in a good play on the golden anniversary theme although, I'm just wondering how much research the did to determine if consumer felt receiving and eating a pizza with gold flakes on it was an appealing idea. I know there is the impression that anything with gold in it is valuable, but eating it may not be considered that appealing by many. I certainly don't find it appealing. Although, I'm not a big pizza eater to begin with.

I have not watched many Super Bowl advertisements since I am not a big fan of American football, but I am aware of one that was groundbreaking. Apple aired it back in the 80s to introduce the Mac. It represented a new approach that focused on a concept rather than a product. The idea of breaking away from Windows, a mindless and mundane user system where follows accepted how things were done without question was presented. The Windows system was presented in a symbolistic way as a break away from this old standard. A young girl carrying a sledge hammer is running from, what appeared to be police dressed in riot gear, enters a room where a film is being viewed by a group gray and dreary-looking people showing no expression as they watch what is being shown. She continues to run towards the screen an throws the sledge hammer at it smashing it. This symbolized a break away from the old regimen. It was done by the innovative film-maker Ridley Scott and was extremely successful.
