SUPER BOWL Recap

The biggest day of the year for advertising has come and gone (marketers spend up to $5 million for 30 seconds of air time) and now it's your turn to share what you thought of it all. What were your favorite and least favorite spots and why?

  1. My personal favorite was the Mobile Strike commercial. I don't play mobile games or even own a smartphone that could play them, but the combination of a celebrity cameo (Arnold Schwarzenegger - as both an unironic and ironic fan of his movies) and absurdity (hotel lobby transforms into a warzone) was what made me like it as much as I did. My least favorite Super Bowl commercial was The Chase by Hyundai. It started out funny, but they played it so many times that I just stopped laughing.

  2. My favorite ad was the Axe one that bent gender stereotypes and the idea of masculinity. I thought this was really great of Axe to do, as a product marketed "to men." There seems to be these harsh gender stereotypes of the binary genders ("male" and "female") in our society, and this ad took a big risk by bending what society thinks of as "masculine." I loved it. We need more gender-breaking commercials!

My least favorite was the Doritos Ultrasound commercial. It made me physically uncomfortable, especially at the end. I like Doritos, but not to that extent!

  3. My favorite commercial for the Super Bowl was released by Axe, called "Find Your Magic". The commercial puts aside its usual sexual undertones surrounding beautiful women and physically fit men. Rather, they identify the societal "misfits" that just need there unique personalities, quirky appearances, and Axe body spray to have a good time and impress a girl. The commercial is empowering and makes you feel good!

My least favorite is the Doritos "ultra sound" commercial, featuring a woman who's baby is about to rip through her uterus to follow the Doritos her husband threw across the room. The overall commercial is rather disturbing and uncomfortable because of what it infers. Watching it more than once really makes me cringe.

  4. My favorite commercials were Bud Light Party with Seth Rogen and Amy Shumer, Doritos Ultrasound, Drake in T-Mobile, Mountain Dew's Puppymonkeybaby, and Hyundai First Date with Kevin Hart. What I learned about myself is I look for humor when I enjoy a commercial and I also like spokespersons aka celebrities. 3/5 commercials had celebrities I knew in them and 5/5 of the commercials had the appeal of humor. Well done.

My least favorite commercials were Mobile Strike, T-Mobile with Steve Harvey, Avocados from Mexico, and Pay Pal's new money old money. None of these caught my attention, but I do remember after actually watching each one having something negative to see about it. I am not a fan of Steve Harvey since my family feud experience first of all. The rest of them were not catchy, funny, or musical enough for my liking.

Overall, I was pleased with the commercials for super bowl 50, but I definitely enjoyed Beyonce at halftime more.

  5. My favorites are Shocktop, Hyundai "First Date", Doritos "Ultrasound" and "Dogs" and the Avocados from Mexico. I chose these ads as my top favorites because of the humor. The humor is what makes it more memorable to me and ultimately I believe ads during the Super Bowl are supposed to be funny. So to me these five ads got the job done and made me laugh. My least favorite ads were Puppymonkeybaby, Skittles, Prius, and Snickers "Marilyn". These ads to me were my least favorite because they tried to be funny and it wasn't. The Puppymonkeybaby is my least favorite ad, it freaks me out and I do not understand the concept of this ad. However the weirdness dose bring attention to there brand and also the song does get stuck in your head. So even though it was my least favorite ad, this was maybe their goal to be weird and memorable. The other three ads that were my least favorite because I felt as they were trying to hard to be funny.

  6. My favorite commercial by far was the T-Mobile commercial with Steve Harvey. They took a competitor commercial originally belonging to Verizon, and created a positive one for themselves. Using Steve Harvey and making that cultural reference was a great tactic, and I'm glad Steve Harvey was willing to do it. I think it was incredibly clever and I admire the creativity that came out of that ad. My least favorite was the Moutain Dew ad with the puppy monkey baby. I hate this commercial entirely, because it has no point. I find it to be very stupid, and the slogan makes little sense to me. The commercial is supposed to advertise their Kickstart drink, and how it combines "three awesome things" known as "dew, juice, and caffeine." I can understand puppies and monkeys being awesome to their target demographic, but babies just don't seem to fit in that category. But I mostly hate this commercial because it is so stupid, yet it accomplished it's goal and people are still talking about it.

  7. Liz DeGroot:
I really like the Heinz condiment commercial. The Weiner dogs dressed as hot dogs is adorable especially when they zoom in on the puppy. Initially it is just a cute shot and mildly confusing showing the dogs dressed as hot dogs. About halfway through the ad, the camera pans to the owners of the dogs dressed as Heinz condiments and it clicks to the viewer that the hot dogs go with the condiments. This advertisement is both witty and hones in on the emotions of viewers with the universal bond between pet owners and their pets. It is simple yet very memorable and well done. I feel that the sign of a good commercial is when you can watch it over and over again without getting tired of it.

  8. After watching most of the Super Bowl commercials, I was not impressed with many. My two favorites were the Prius Car Chase commercial and the Heinz wiener dog commercial. I thought the Prius commercial was actually funny and still incorporated a lot of the good features of a Prius. Most people would be shocked to actually see a Prius in a car chase, so the entire commercial was pretty ironic. The Heinz wiener dog commercial was adorable in my opinion. I usually think commercials with puppies in commercials can sometimes be cheap and unoriginal, but using the wiener dogs connected with the ketchup aspect of the commercial. My two least favorite commercials was the Doritos Pregnancy commercial and the Schick Robot Razor commercial. The Doritos commercial just completely freaked me out and honestly, made me lose my appetite. No one wants to think about a woman going into a painful labor because of an unborn baby who wants a Dorito. In my opinion the advertisement then became completely ineffective because no one wants to eat Dorito's after losing their appetite. The Schick commercial featuring the razors turning into robots and fighting also completely missed the mark for me. This was a commercial featured in the Super Bowl and it was incredibly boring and dry.

  9. My favorite Superbowl ad that seemed to fit in better with the content and product was LG-Future Man-It was a sleek, clean, film-noir style ad using Liam Neison. It had a lot of action and great visual effects. I felt if fit the demographic and product marketed well.

My least favorite ad was done by a new advertiser and it was the Marmot Outdoor Gear. I think they focused a little too much on how cute things were as opposed to their product and the scenic beauty of the outdoors. It was just a little too weird for me and I and an outdoors kind of person.

  10. My favorite SuperBowl commercial was the T-Mobile one that included artist Drake. I thought it was clever how a cell phone provider collaborated with Drake and his song "Hotline Bling" which refers to to people calling him on his cellphone. It was creative to relate the song to the cellphone business since Drake has a big presence the the entertainment industry.
The advertisement that was least appealing to me was the Apartment.com ad that included artist Lil Wayne and a gentleman playing George Washington. The company took a ethic and racial route and could be considered offensive to certain audiences.

  11. Every year I enjoy watching the creativity that was manifested to produce these wildly out of the box ideas. They're aired for a short period of time once a year, and it takes a lot of gumption to put their ideas out there. This year I enjoyed pretty much every commercial there was, but the one that stuck out the most was Avocado Mexico. It was aired early in the festivity and caught most people off guard. I have never heard of this company, due to the fact that I despise the taste of avocados. Though, their creative commercial has captured my attention with their satiric way of viewing the human race. The commercial I didn't enjoy the most would be Axe. They posted their commercial all over Facebook way before the Super Bowl arrived. So by the time the Super Bowl came and the same commercial was aired, that I have been watching for a whole week prior to this event, It lost all of it's WOW factor.

  12. I have to be entirely honest when I say that I didn't pay enough attention to all of the advertisements during the Superbowl. With that being said, I can't say if there we're any ads in particular that I didn't like. However, I did have a few favorites. My first favorite was the commercial for Doritos when the group of dogs can't into the grocery store to buy themselves Doritos, because they're dogs. Using animals is one of the best ways to draw an audiences attention. My other favorite commercial was for T-Mobile that featured rapper, Drake. Normally I'm not a fan of his personality, but I think they did a good job to make the commerical seem like a real video shoot with his real comments and judgement. Audiences also love to see celebrities endorse products so this take for T-Mobile definitely worked.
