For today's blog, take inventory of your life as portrayed on the internet. Have you ever googled your name? What kind of story are you telling through your social media profiles? Do you think your social media presence might affect your future, especially when it comes to employment? Why or why not? If so, what changes do you need to implement in order to create a more cohesive, intentional online story?
Over the years, I've Google'd myself a good amount. The first few things that pop up are about another Tyler Sikora that committed suicide in California. On my social media accounts, I do not post anything including illegal activity or anything doing with drinking or smoking. I know the risks that it would put me in after I graduate. I'm working so hard in college to get good grades and internships that posting a picture or video like that would put my career at risk so I don't bother. I am not worried about a company trying to dig up any negative information on me because I don't post anything that would harm my career.
ReplyDeleteI am constantly on social media. Not many people will admit it but yes I have googled myself before. Most things that come up are my facebook, twitter and then articles from high school when I played varsity volleyball. It is not a surprise and honestly it does not bother me that people can find me so easily. My social profiles will not really have much of an effect on future employment. I keep my profile clean and do not post anything that could raise questions. But really I don’t do much to raise any outstanding questions. I tell a story of my life, things I have done, places I have seen and people I share life with. I am more of an observer and rarely post things, when I do it is nothing bad, but good things that happen in life.

When I google my name my Instagram pictures and my Twitter profile come up. The story telling done through my social media profile pretty much reflect my personality and my life through pictures and status. I always use the mom rule when it comes to social media so I doubt it will affect my future. If it is a post that I don't my mother seeing I will not post it. Also I have various family members following me on social media including my mother so its for keeping my social profiles clean.
ReplyDeleteI have googled my name before but got nothing interesting or worth mentioning out of it, I tell the most about myself through games because I don't really use any other social media, my facebook doesn't tell much and I doubt it would mess with my employment. Because I want to work on the game industry I believe the fact that I am not a toxic player, which is what I try to convey to others when I play, should, if anything, help me at landing a job where I want even though it shouldn't matter unless it was a big deal but it is always nice to look at someone and notice they have no bans or problems with people.
ReplyDeleteMy name is surprisingly common, so it does not come up for many pages on google searches/image searches. All of my social media accounts except my linkedin are focussed on cosplay and/or video games, therefore unless my future employers strongly dislike those things, I do not think they will affect my future. In fact, most of the bosses I've had have found out about my cosplaying one way or another, and all have been completely cool with it, or at least interested to some extent.
ReplyDeleteWhen I google my name only two things pop up: my linked in and a GoFundMe that I created as a charity. I have other social media accounts that I use with a different name so I can keep my personal and professional life separate. Overall I do not feel that my social media presence would be an issue for the future. The jobs I am applying for are all communications and sales positions, and a few photos of me drinking would not be an issue since I am 21. Ultimately, if someone googled my full name they would only see a professional and charitable side of me. However, even if future employees came across my Facebook or Instagram, it would not be an issue.
ReplyDeleteWhen I google my name you can see my profile basketball, videos and pictures of me, articles of my basketball career, and all information basketball related when I played for my national team and with the University of Toledo in Ohio. I think social media influences a lot on how people look at you and also for future job and references. In my case, when it comes to basketball all the coaches and universities go and look to your profile on social media. With that information along with your skills and coach and teammates references they decide If they want you or not. Once you get to those teams, they also tell you to be very careful on what you share and how you share it. Also, I also know that for any type of job there has been a lot of cases where employees got fired just because they shared something inappropriate online.
ReplyDeleteTo sum up, I would say that I use correctly social media, trying always to be respectful to myself and others, preaching about positivity and well behaviour.
I have Googled my name before, when I was a little younger. At the time, I found mostly other people and two references to me in local newspapers: one for honor roll and one for a soccer championship. Today, I'd probably pop up a little quicker because I am on many forms of social media. I think that on social media I portray different parts of myself than someone would necessarily see in person. For instance, on Facebook I put photos of my best experiences and me with my friends. I don't really post statuses, but I share links that are important to me or I want people to know about me/my home. On Twitter, I showcase my funnier side only retweeting things I find amusing and occasionally tweeting original content. On Instagram (which I am very new to) I showcase my artsy side with my best photography, not cute selfies. And on Snapchat, I show my more cynical side with mildly scathing snaps to my friends and schoolmates. No site shows all of it, like how I am in person. Also, for the most part, no social media site shows my bad days or unpleasant experiences. I don't share that part of my life on social media. I think social media could affect future employment if it is public and contains illegal/illicit activities, racist comments/posts, or severe immaturity. My YouTube and Wordpress are for work content, and that's the face meant for employers. However, nothing else on my social media sites would be detrimental if seen by employers, so I don't think I would need to change it.

Although I check social media almost everyday, I only post on certain occasions. I've Googled my name, which links to my LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. I only use Twitter for my work with The Minaret, and only post to Facebook went out with family or friends. I don't think my social media presence will affect my future negatively. I'm always aware of the fact that anything I post online can be seen by anyone, including potential employers.

Facebook is my most frequent used media. There, my profile is private to public, but open to my friend. My profiles include my basic information, which is to say that I don't want to let people know much about my personal life. However, to my friend, I joke and post on my page a lot and my friends can see it. I am quite careful to make friend on Facebook, however, I believe it reflects my personality. About my future life and career, it will affect because my employers can see my old posts and prejudge me if they do not know me well. On the other hand, they also can see some specialties from me if they are effective to work.
